Xmas Parcel Appeal Updates

**  15,351 **

Final Update

The response to the Appeal 2007has been overwhelming and we're absolutely delighted to report that a grand total of 15,351 parcels were sent out by SOS co-ordinators, each parcel representing the support and best wishes of the British public!

Below you'll find updates from myself, Agnes and our wonderful team showing how the parcels were put together and sent on their way!  Please also see Xmas Parcels 2007 page for pictures of the parcels being received and thank you letters!

Karen - Bingley

Well this year we have quite literally been overwhelmed by the genorosity shown by so many individuals, organisations and companies alike.  Words cannot express our gratitude for the kindness shown.  There have been so many wonderful gestures made and whilst I would love to mention each and everyone of them unfortunately that just isn't possible.  Please do know however that every single item received, every single penny donated is very, very much appreciated.  So to avoid taking over the whole of the page, this is a very condensed (!) report from the Bingley team -

I'd like to begin by thanking our fantastic pack and wrappers - now fondly known as paws - without them this quite literally would not have been possible!  Packing & wrapping began on the 17th November and pretty much continued on a non stop basis throughout the next three weeks!  So sincere thanks to Jean, Irene and Emma who answered our call for help in the papers, to Anita and David, Bev, Pauline and James, and Sharon and Jake who turned up week after week and simply got on with it, turning the living room into a full scale operations room! To Patsi and Pat for travelling all the way from Bury to help out.  And special thanks to my daughters Becky and Sammi, my daughter in law Kat, my grandaughter Sophie and Judith for being there constantly and working tirelessly.

Karen, Anita, Kat, David, Judith & Bev                         Jake

Bev, James & Pauline            'Princess' Sophie & the decorations

Becky (still watching telly!)                         Bev on a roll!

Sincere thanks also go to Sgt Duncan Sims, PSI Keighley TA and to Sgt Kerry Naylor and cadets from Bingley ATC who came along to load and deliver the first batch of parcels to the local sorting office.  And thanks too to Nicky and Josh for helping here!  Many hands ....

The first batch of 895 parcels on their way!

Thanks to Denise and Andrew who brought over their own parcels, plus a wonderful selection of items collected by staff at Bradford & Bingley Crossflatts & Bingley offices, plus lent a hand at a very opportune time.  Roped in I think you might say!

Denise & Andrew

The Royal Mail have been absolutely fantastic and special thank yous to Philip at Bradford Sorting Office and the post man who's name I didn't get for all their help and being so cheerful too!

Batch Two 975 parcels                 Batch Three 924 parcels

We've been delighted to see so many children getting involved this year.  Contibutions have included a selection of poems, stories and colourful drawings all completed by children who attend the British School of Madeira, Madeira Portugal and organised by Tracy Pfaff, Editor of The Brit, fantastic cards made by made by the children in Primary 4 at The Mary Erskine and Stewart's Melville Junior School and more beautiful cards made by the children at St Margaret's Sunday School. AD Astra First School also made a very kind donation.

St Margaret's Sunday School                    British School of Madeira

The Mary Erskine and Stewart's Melville Junior School

Once again members of 1st Bingley Scout Group which incorporates the  Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, took part in the Appeal and put together fifteen wonderful parcels plus a beautiful hand made cake.  Many thanks to Joy for organising this.

Our own branch of Army cadets took part for the fifth year running but were joined this year by branches throughout West Yorkshire, working with Helen our Huddersfield representative too. These included Mirfield, Thongsbridge, Spen Valley, Huddersfield, Skipton, Odsal & Bingley. In total they collected 157 boxes in just over two weeks.  Bingley also wrapped 100 parcels in about an hour - a huge help!

Many and sincere thanks go to Damart who provided us with literally thousands of posting sacks.  A very important factor in our packing procedure and much appreciated!

Moving on to donations, our very sincere thanks go to Ken and Ann Dodgson of Morley, Leeds who presented us with a cheque for a grand total of £1,056.25!  Contributions towards this were made by Management and Staff of First Leeds at Bramley Garage, First Leeds Marketing Manager - Charles Donnelly, Morley Lions, Members of South Leeds Golf Club, Committee members of the Yorkshire Rabbit Golf Association, Guests at the dinner of the Leeds & District Rabbit Golf Association, Morley Walking Club, Morley Family HIstory Group, Thursday Owls and finally friends, neighbours and Councillors in Morley who attended their coffee morning.  This is a remarkable achievement and we really are very grateful to Ken and Ann for all that they've done.

Ken and Ann Dodgson

Sincere thanks also go to Grahame and Liz Walker who drove over from Southport and presented us with a wonderful 34 made up parcels and donations totalling £572.50.  This is the second year that Grahame and Liz have taken part and we're truly grateful to them and to everyone who has contributed.  Donations were made by South Sefton Rotary Club, Southport Meols Rotary Club, Southport Probus Club, Holy Trinity Church Southport and Mr & Mrs Colin Ryan.  Unfortunately I don't have a picture at the moment but will add this as soon as possible.

Sincere thanks also to Ian Waterworth of the West Riding Submariners Association for delivering 25 beautifully made up parcels.  Again this is the second year that they've taken part and the support much appreciated.

And to Diane Heath and everyone at The Dibb who between them sent a grand total of 158 parcels. Diane told us 'We have all enjoyed the project immensly and I know that some folk have been so keen that they will be contributing to SOS year on year now.' Great news and thank you Diane for putting so much effort into organising this.

Many thanks also go to:

Jennie Stagg and everyone at Tilehurst Bingo Club in Reading who collected many boxes of parcel fillers and sent them up to us.

Steph Ball in Tidworth who collected a wonderful £500

SLM who collected £100 at her son Nick's welcome home party

241 (Wanstead & Woodford) Squadron Air Training Corps for many, many parcels all beautifully packaged and with lots of fun items too!

Staff & customers at the Volunteer Arms in Stockport who held a fun day & raised £265.

Verity Radford for sending three huge boxes of parcel fillers - all the way from Hong Kong!

And thanks also go to the press for their fantastic coverage. A special mention must be given to Liz and Vicki-Marie of the Metro who have not only promoted the appeal throughout but have also encouraged companies to donate goods, two van loads to be precise! Just a few of the articles published locally -

And the Appeal also featured on the One Show -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow/article/2007/12/cb_packages.shtml

These really are just a few of the highlights of the Appeal and of the wonderful donations or parcels that we've had through. Again I'm sorry not to have mentioned everyone but, as I said above, we are truly grateful for every single contribution.

The result of everyone's kindness was a grand total of 3,040 parcels sent from here in Bingley!  I think that speaks for itself!  Thank you one and all!

Agnes - Ayr

Can you believe an amazing 2,500 parcels sent by Agnes!!! Report and pictures will be added as soon as she's caught her breath! This really is fantastic and huge thanks and congratulations go to her for such a marvellous result.

A very brief few words from Agnes for the moment -

"Our final total was 2500.....with another four parcels sent this morning and 6 packing cases  of  stuff, too big to send out, to Selly Oak and Headley Court.

Thanks to Dave Rose & Staff, Kyle Centre Ayr, without whose generosity in providing accommodation and assistance, this would not be possible, to everyone who donated items/cash to purchase, all my Scottish 'helpers' and my local team of Shona, Carol & Mamie (The Cumnock Girls), Bob & Margaret and Liz, Nan Hatfield, Jane, my sister Martha and hubby Ronald and pal Gordon McKillop.

Last but not least, Grant, Dave and Jim from PO sorting office, Ayr, who have ferried all the parcels to their destination for us.

Thanks to all the co-ordinators & helpers across the country who helped make this the best ever CP Appeal. Have a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Guied New Year. Agnesx"

October 29th 2007

Well the Parcel Appeal has taken off this year in the most remarkable way and we've literally been inundated with donations and offers of help.  Because it has been so busy to follow is a very brief summary of what's happened to date, and we do hope to add to this page far more regularly over the coming weeks!

As many of you know, the official SOS Charity Launch took place on the 27th October and we were delighted to be made some very special presentations -

From Craig Lundberg a wonderful donation of £500 from The Freddie Fund. Craig presented us with the cheque so that parcels could be sent out to his friends and colleagues still serving overseas. Sincere thanks to Craig, and to all his wonderful family for organising this.

We were also delighted to receive a cheque for £100 from Pastor Darren Johnson collected from the friends and congregation of King's Church Warrington.  Thank you so much Darren, and Joolz too for her involvement with this.

And as if they weren't doing enough already, our very own SOS ladies very kindly presented £55 towards the fund, you're stars girls - and boys! - thank you.

Very belated yet sincere thanks to Jill Bending, S Gandy and Hilary Dolan for their kind donations of Bookcrossing books for the parcels.

To our own Di G for sending a huge box of facecloths!

To Emma in Gibraltar, Brenda Bishop and Kate Lindsay and her friends, Margaret Gregson, Margaret Morgan, Elizabeth Hughes and Julia Powell for all the beautiful hand made Xmas cards.  Everyone said their cards might not be good enough but believe you me they are beautiful and such obvious love and care has gone into the making these so thank you one and all!
