When Our Sons Went Away

When our sons went away…

The smile was gone from our face
In our broken hearts there was just an empty space
The clouds rolled in
The sun was dark in our eyes
It was so hard to smile when we wanted to cry

When our sons went away…
They took us along as well
We were there right beside them
In that desert hell
They were the first thought that we had every day
And last thing at night we would
think of them and pray

When our sons went away…
No one else understood
They couldn’t know that “He’ll be fine!” was just no good
They told us, “Oh, don’t worry! He’ll be home soon”
They might as well have asked us to fly to the moon

When our sons went away…
It was just so hard to cope… how could we be happy?
It seemed easier to mope
There seemed no place that we could turn
No one to understand…
Then we found ‘The Fellowship’ and they held out a hand

When our sons went away…
We found a wonderful Club
Full of other hurting mums
Ready to give us all a hug
At long last we knew that

we were no longer alone
Here was a place that we could come
A place we could call Home

When our sons went away…
It seemed like forever
But - Thank You God!
We got through it together
Through many tears and heartaches
Through our fears and through the sorrow
We hung on tight and rode the storm
And made it to tomorrow

When our sons came BACK - Oh!
What utter, total joy!
The relief was indescribable
When at last we saw our boy!
Our smiles - they came back!
The clouds - they were banished!
And our dreams - they were sweet because
The nightmares had all vanished

So now our Heroes all are back
One by one we cheered them home
And now we know we have each other
Whenever they next may roam

No doubt there will be other Tours
And we’ll journey together once more
But remember this, dear Shipmates -
We WILL reach the next far shore

The next time you get the dreaded news
That no mother wants to hear
SOS will be right there
To help allay your fear

So raise a glass, dear mothers
Dear wives and girlfriends, too
And for all our lovely children -
We send a hug to you
This Ship will always be here
In fair weather and in foul
And because we have each other
She will never run aground
