ABOUT US

Karen Webster                    Agnes Hunter

Support Our Soldiers was formed in April 2003 by Karen and Agnes with the aim, at that time, to encourage & provide support for the British Troops serving in Iraq

Over the years SOS has gone from strength to strength, and in August 2007 we were delighted to be granted official charity status

We have a wonderful team on board, all of whom share our passion and commitment, and are dedicated to supporting all members of our Armed Forces and their families.

You can read more about the Support Our Soldiers team below.  Please note that email addresses are 'hidden' to try and avoid spam emails.  If you need to get in touch with one of our co-ordinators but can't access via the link then simply enter the first name of the a/c followed by @supportoursoldiers.co.uk

Karen Webster - Founder

Back in February 2003 my son, serving with 12 Regt Royal Artillery, was deployed to Iraq.  As anyone who's been in the same situation knows, this was a very difficult time for me, and in order to do something positive and constructive I came up with the idea of setting up this website.  The aim then being to encourage and provide support for the British Troops serving in Iraq.  Since that time SOS has gone from strength to strength and we've also evolved into a support site for families with wives, girlfriends, mums, dads, brothers, sisters and children of serving personnel all checking in.  My son left the army at the end of 2004 and I'm now a very proud granny, but my pledge to all serving personnel and to their families is to continue with Support Our Soldiers for just as long as is needed. Karen

Agnes Hunter - Founder SOS Scotland

My son was also deployed to Iraq at the beginning of 2003 and in the initial stages of the conflict I was involved with another support group.  Karen and I very soon got to know each other however and decided to join forces.  In May 2003 SOS Scotland was formed and we've literally gone from strength to strength since!  I'm very passionate about supporting our Armed Forces and prepared to take on any challenges thrown my way!  I was instrumental in persuading the Government to introduce Free Postage on parcels to the Gulf in 2003, and although this has been withdrawn will continue in the fight for reinstatement for just as long as it takes. I'm very proud to lead a dedicated team of helpers here in Scotland, and to see interest in the site grow on a daily basis.  Looking forward to hearing from you!  Agnes

Kat - Donations Co-ordinator

As Karen's daughter in law, it would be hard not to be involved with SOS but I do genuinely love the enthusiasm and team spirit that goes into this, and the fact that we can make a difference to people's lives.  I'm married (well almost!) to an ex-solider and have a beautiful two year old daughter.  I work full time as an Account Executive within a busy Marketing Agency and now spend most of my spare time working on SOS, particularly the corporate donations side.   Please feel free to contact me and I'll do my very best to help!  Kat

I sincerely hope that I can do a good job for SOS and look forward to hearing from anyone who wishes to contact me and  to making new friends.  Joy

Having being involved with the Christmas Parcel appeal and not only seen how successful it was but how much the troops apprecaited all the efforts and support, I wish to continue with this on a long tem basis.. As a soldiers mom, I can appreciate the support they need, but also the support families need.  Most of the support in our area at Christmas was from non military connected people who have no way of becoming involved other than through SOS.  I therefore wanted to be that contact and continue the wonderful support shown throughout the new year and beyond. If anyone needs a shoulder to cry on or wants to help out in anyway please feel free to contact me.  I'm not as stupid as my photo looks. Maria

Helensburgh - Louise

Hi Everyone, I’m Louise (Lou) I’m originally a Yorkshire Lass and lived in Leeds all of my life until moving to  Helensburgh, Scotland in February 2007.  My husband is in the Royal Navy serving on Submarines, and many moons ago he served in Army in the Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire.  We have 3 beautiful children, 2 boys aged 11 and 3 and a girl aged 7.  I found SOS on the internet in November 2007 and decided I’d like to add my support,  My husband remembered receiving a box from a well wisher when he was posted to Iraq in 1991 and said how much it had meant to him. I got a great sense of satisfaction from making up just a few boxes, it was quite exciting finding bits and pieces to put in the boxes and seeing just how much I could cram in!! I have decided to become more involved with SOS and spread the word locally.  So if anyone fancies giving me a hand from time to time, or you just want a chat, please feel free to drop me a line Louise

Hereford - Liz

I am an ex QARANC and met my husband while serving in Germany. He was Royal Signals for over 30 years during which time we lived mostly in Europe , Far East and Middle East with our three children. Continued to nurse around the world whilst at the same time studying with the OU and eventually getting a Masters degree in Environmental Science. Know how difficult it is, especially for young mothers, to deal with separation and bring up children whilst husbands are away and know how important support from friends, relatives and the Regiment is. Now retired, I am a SSAFA Caseworker based in Herefordshire and run my own business. Being very concerned about the lack of support from the general population and in particular the poor medical care given to our returning troops I contacted the Army Benevolent Fund and was given the contact details of SOS in the hope that I can help in some way. As I am a new recruit I have a lot to learn but look forward to being part of such a fantastic team.  Liz

Ipswich - Danni

I am 32, and been married to a pro musician for 7 years. I am a Care Assistant in a Nursing Home, which has 30 residents. I have a 13yr old dog called Meg and keep tropical fish. In my spare time I love doing all kinds of photography, especially aviation and animal photography. My uncle was in the RAF for 42 years, and both my grandfathers were in the Army during WWII. I got involved with the 2007 Xmas Parcel Appeal and have loved being involved with SOS, so much so I want to help in whatever way I can

Danni

Keighley & Skipton - John

My name is John and I am supposed to be retired!  I was a Housing Manager for many years.  Currently I teach Tai Chi and Chi King mainly, though not exclusively to people with disabilities or learning difficulties.  I served in the RAF as did my dad and uncles before me.  Amongst other things, I am on the committee of the RAFA, Skipton Branch.  The RAFA does a lot of work with Veterans and the dependants of those who have or are serving in the Royal Air Force.  As a Veteran myself I want to do what I can to support our lads and lassies serving on the front line. I do not necessarily agree with the reasons given for the various conflicts but nevertheless the Troops need all the assistance and encouragement we can give them.  I believe Support Our Soldiers fulfills this need admirably.  We've got operations started in Keighley and Skipton, and do need volunteers to help out, so if anyone is interested please do get in touch!

I look forward to attending the publicity activities and to meeting some of the many friends who are out there helping our people.  See you then. John

London - Jacqueline

I am 51 years married to David, and moved to this area approx 4 years ago from Stearton in Ayrshire. So don,t know too many people down here, that is one reason i have found sos a great help to me. I have two sons Kevin and Graeme both serving in Iraq together with the Royal Artillery. They have received parcels and good wishes from sos and speaking to them made me realise how much it was appreciated by them, but it also brought it home to me that there is a lot of troops out there who do not receive even an e-bluey, and i think that's what made me want to do all i could to help

Jacqueline

London - Victoria

I'm Victoria, i'm 22 from South East London. I wanted to join SOS because i've had family members in the forces (2 uncles, Irish Fusilier and REME) a friend in the RAF and my lovely boyfriend is currently away serving in Afghanistan with the REME. This is his first tour so it's quite a difficult time for me. I thought joining SOS would give me a great chance to speak to others that are in the same situation. This is a perfect way for me to show my support and thanks to our brave boys and girls that fight so we don't have to. I know how thankful they are to get parcels, cards and letters. I look forward to doing everything i can to help! Victoria

Luton - Louise J

Born and bred in London I lived there for many years before uncovering a very well kept secret - the fantastic countryside that is on Luton's doorstep. Sometimes I get to ride in this if the horse graciously consents.  I also foster cats for Cats Protection.  I first became involved with SOS during the Xmas Parcel AppeaI and have continued to send care packages since then.  Being involved with SOS is a way of saying "thank you" to our Armed Services and their families, and I love doing the boxes.  I hope I can help.  If I I don't know the answer to a question I'll certainly do my best to find out. Please do feel free to get in touch!  Louise J

Hi, I'm Brenda (probably better know as Young Fred).  I live on Canvey Island in Essex and have been married to Eddie for more years than I care to remember.  I have a daughter and two grandchildren.  I had been sending personal goody parcels to the troops long before discovering SOS just to show my support and appreciation for the sacrifices they make to defend my grandchildren.  When I found this inspirational site a few years ago I realised just how difficult it can be for the loved ones at home, and became an avid reader of the forum.  I summoned up the courage to post a couple of years agao and although I felt at the time as though I intruded I was welcomed in to the SOS family despite having no current military connections.  I've decided to offer my services and will be pleased to do all I can to further the work of Support Our Soldiers  Brenda

Southend On Sea - Kelly

Hello my name is Kelly and I’m 26, married and have a little boy of 7 months.  I only found out about SOS recently when I was looking for a website where I could do something to support the services out in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I wanted to send parcels out to the troops but I didn’t know how to go about it, which was when I stumbled across SOS.  I live in Southend-on-Sea in Essex and noticed that there wasn’t a representative at all in the whole of Essex, therefore thought that I would volunteer my services!  Kelly

Stevenage - Julie

Hi everyone, really pleased to say hello. I am Julie and live in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. I am a Sheltered Housing Scheme Manager in this area. This is my sons first tour in Afghanistan and when he went I had a void to fill, even though my daughter, her other half and my grandaughter live just down the road. I was told about the web site and have found it to be so very supportive. So much so I want to give something back. I have started with the Xmas Appeal but will continue throughout as I know firsthand the rollercoaster of emotions that friends, family, and colleagues of members of the armed forces may feel. I am always here if anyone needs a little extra support. I know I did. Julie xxx

Feel free to contact me about anything & I will do my best to help out. Puds xx

Sunderland - Joyce

have been married to Phil since forever, and have two boys. David who is in the RAF and stationed in Scotland and Matthew, who is studying Music Production at Newcastle University. I discoverd the S.O.S. site one night by accident and have really enjoyed being a part of something that is so uplifting and supportive of our troops.  I am really looking forward to representing the generosity of the people here in Sunderland. Truro - Marie

Hi my name is Marie. I am married with four sons, my eldest son is in the Army Air Corp.  I found out about SOS through going on Facebook and becoming a fan on the British Armed Forces page.  There was a lady on there organising the sending of parcels to some soldiers.  I e-mailed her and asked for more information, and she gave the web address for Support Our Soldiers.  At first I just wanted to get involved with the Christmas pack and wrap, but after finding out more about SOS, I decided that I wanted to become more involved.  Please feel free to contact me about anything. Walsall, Wolverhampton, Sandwell & Dudley - Mary

Hi, my name is Mary. I am a Nurse Specialist in Critical Care in Walsall, West Midlands I am married to Craig and have one son David who is an Irish Guard.   My son was deployed to Iraq on his first tour of duty last year.  I discovered SOS whilst David was undergoing basic training at Catterick, and I can honestly say it has been a lifeline for me as my son was deployed immediately after finishing his basic training. I did not know anyone else who had loved ones who were in the armed services and found the SOS site a tremendous source of support and practical advice.  I decided to offer to help with the parcels appeal as a way of giving back some of the support that I had been given.   I am very proud of all our servicemen and women.   I also strongly believe that our troops deserve the support of the British public and also benefit from the support that they receive from the ‘folks back home’.   I have recently become A/C for the ‘Black Country’ area (Walsall, Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Dudley), and am looking forward to continuing the support for our troops in my area, if you would like further advice or help please feel free to contact me Mary

Rachel - Watford

I originally didn't know anyone in the Forces when I first joined SOS. I was just a very supportive civilian, who was inspired by Ross Kemp's Afghanistan series and the inspiring story of the soldier Martyn Compton and his wife Michelle.Reading their book Home From War made me realise how much the families of our troops are effected when their loved ones go to war.  I came on to SOS looking for information about sending care packages and since then,  i have met some lovely friends and even have become friends with some lovely lads in the RAF. SOS has been such an enjoyable experience and it has made me realise how special and amazing our British troops really are. Rachel

Wigan - Carol

Hi my name is Carol and I have been married to Paul for the last eleven years, have two wonderful grown up sons and two adorable granddaughters. I am 54 years old and have been encouraged to become involved with SOS  by my youngest son Dan who is a serving officer with REME. He did a tour of Afghanistan last year and has impressed upon me how important parcels are for the morale of the troops out there. I come from a very military oriented family, my eldest son, Kev,  was also in REME until he met and married a lovely Canadian girl and moved over there. My dad was in the TA for years, my brother, brother-in-law, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather have all been in the army so I fully support our Troops and can empathise with families of those deployed abroad. I don’t work anymore and my interests these days are my computer, reading and knitting for reborn (which I sell on ebay).  I have plenty of spare time and am more than happy to offer any help I can to anyone who needs it.  Please feel free to contact me Carol

Wirral - Michelle

Hi. I acted as area co-ordinator for Wirral in the Christmas Parcels 2006 appeal, and have at last plucked up the courage to hopefully do it on a bigger scale this year!  I'm a moderator on a busy football message board, which was very useful in spreading the word about SOS before Christmas.  My grandad was in the Army, my uncle in the RAF, and now my cousin's son is in the Marines and spent Christmas in Afghanistan.  My dad and my husband both used to be in the Merchant Navy, so I know a little about six month separations. I've had a few penfriends in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last couple of years, which led me to SOS as I so much wanted to do something to help our lads and lasses and their families.  It was very heart-warming when I was collecting for the Christmas Parcels to hear how much people care about our troops, and I was very humbled by the wonderful thank you letters I received. I look forward to becoming more involved with SOS as it's something I feel very strongly about, and if I can offer any support please get in touch. Michelle xx

York - Rebecca

Hi, Im Rebecca, mum to Alfie and girlfriend to Ben who is ex Yorkshire Regiment. I first 'found' SOS when Ben was deployed to Iraq back in 2006. SOS supported me through both his tour and when we lost our friend, Luke, so I know first hand just how valuable the charity is and I am honoured to be appointed to help out. I look forward to hearing from everyone & dont hesitate to contact me with any questions. Rebecca
